The playful and joyous Juba: Dance by Nathanial Dett, is a short piano solo from the “In the Bottoms Suite.”

Between the ragtime feel, and bouncy left-hand jumps, I am constantly reminded of the four children as they arrived at the Professor’s house. They are excited to play and explore the old house to their hearts desire as Peter stated, “This is going to be perfectly splendid. That old chap will let us do anything we like” (Lewis 4). Then when the repeat of the opening occurs, but in the minor key, I can imagine Edmund’s first trip to Narnia as he greedily accepted the Turkish Delight from the White Witch, corrupted by the sweet taste of the candy and promise of power and superiority over his siblings.

I hope you enjoy!
