Solfeggio in C minor is a fast moving and rapid solo keyboard work by the incredible composer, CPE Bach.
This unique work with its speedy passages is an example of a toccata, a virtuoso piece of music that showcases the abilities of a performer’s fingers and control. With a monophonic theme that makes it unusual for piano works, composure and playing evenly is something that needs to be focused on throughout the entire piece. When playing this piece, I reflected upon just how strong of an analogy it is to life and our decisions that we make. Life’s choices, just like the quick sixteenth notes that the piece is made up of, have to be made with good control and awareness, otherwise just like when I forget to pay attention, the piece spirals out of control. Another symbolistic part of this piece is the constant change of dynamics as well. In some sections, the dynamics are forte and accent notes while in other areas of the piece, the dynamics are soft and piano. This also demonstrated to me the large variety of ups and downs that come in life and with our decisions.
I hope you enjoy!
