“This story is about something that happened to them when they were sent away from London during the war because of the air raids” (Lewis 3). Though only mentioned briefly, the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe all came as a product of the greed displayed by countries and world leaders around the globe in World War II. Countries at this time sought to become more powerful, have more territory, become wealthier, and/or seek revenge, the result of which started a brutal war. During this time of war, families had to limit their food intake, so that soldiers on the front lines could stay nourished. This would have been the case for the Pevensie family as well! No wonder Edmund wished for Turkish Delight upon meeting the White Witch, sugar was one of the rationed goods! The recipe below is for Woolton Pie, which was created by a chef in London (the location in which the Pevensie children had lived), and is a filling pie using vegetables that could’ve been grown in home gardens and lots of potatoes, which were very cheap.
